Overview

Exploring orthotic troubleshooting post fitting. A comprehensive overview of
commonly encountered fitting concerns including footwear compatibility, device
intolerance and unsuccessful symptom management. We will explore practical in-
office orthotic adjustments and footwear selection considerations, which can be
utilized to address such situations. This session will focus on adjustment techniques
as well as enhance the practitioner’s ability to successfully prescribe their orthotic
device by learning the manufacturing process of custom foot orthotics.

A

ndrew Goff is the founder and CEO of Spinario Orthotic Lab. Throughout his 14
years in professional Chiropody practice he focused his time and efforts to the field
of biomechanics and orthotics. During this time he developed a unique approach to
treating his patient population through integrating a diversity of shell materials into
his orthotic practice. Spinario Orthotic lab fulfills his goal to provide foot specialists
at home and abroad with a similar diversity in orthotic devices.

About Karen Flavelle

aren Flavelle is a licensed Insurance Broker in Ontario, Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. In Ontario, she operates as a corporation called Ross Flavelle Insurance & Financial Services Inc. She will be discussing the importance of financial security as a working professional, and specifically showing the New Graduates how Disability Insurance works, and the benefits its provides to the Chiropody profession. She has been meeting with the Chiropody graduating class at the Michener since 1997 and has been able to offer exclusive discounts and custom-designed plans through several Insurance Companies in order to find the best option for each specific client.

Prescribing Considerations.

How are your orthotics going to fit in the patients footwear?  How to have the discussion about expectations with how orthotics fit a particular shoe; is there a need for multiple pairs? Are your material selections(both shell and top cover) ideal for the indication/pathology/shoe last?

How are orthotics manufactured?

An overview of the manufacturing process of custom foot orthotics.  By understanding how devices are made it will allow you to prescribe them more effectively.

In office dispensing.

What challenges are you likely to face with your fitting?  How do you evaluate if the orthotic fits/functions properly?  What skills/equipment do you need to consider in order to accommodate for such problems?  Patient satisfaction with a successful fitting; how it impacts your practice.

Orthotic follow up and troubleshooting.

How do you evaluate the device to determine where to start?  Footwear considerations: maybe it isn’t the orthotic? Is your adjustment one that affects function or is it accommodating?  When do you re-assess and start from scratch?

Practical office adjustments.

How does in office adjustments affect your practice?  What equipment and materials are necessary to have a successful in office adjustment?  When do you send the orthotic back to the lab?  Is the adjustment one that requires cast work? How you can boost revenue by doing your own top covering and refurbishment in office?

Grinding and Adjustment Workshop.

The attendees will attain the skills needed to be successful in preforming in-office orthotics adjustments.  Through use of heat guns, bench grinder and various materials, the student will be able to practice beveling, wedging and shell modifications along with making temporary adjustments pertaining to top covering.  There will also be an emphasis on how to make enhancements to orthotics in cases where additional padding and accommodations are necessary.
